See those eyes, and how they’re looking directly at you? Well, it is in fact a painting of eyes. To be more specific, Harper’s Bazaar commissioned artist Marc Quinn to look into the souls of fashion designers, through their eyes. And what’s most astounding about this whole project is that he was able to get Karl Lagerfeld, the notoriously covered designer, to take his sunglasses off.

And those two glossy brown peepers up there? Those are his. And they are beautiful. For context, this is how ol’ Karl usually looks:

He’s hidden, as if he and Anna Wintour got together at a sunglasses conference one day and decided “We need these – for protection, against the sun, the world and ourselves.

Other eyes captured in this stunning project include Alexander McQueen designer Sarah Burton and Stella McCartney. And, to be honest, their eyes are the kind of icy blue that immediately stops you in your tracks.

So, there you have it. People have eyes, and when you get right up close and personal with ’em (especially when those people rarely want you to see them), the result is a truly beautiful thing. We hope Karl keeps the glasses off, at least once in a while.
