It’s been three long, painful months but it looks like the mess that was Johnny Depp and Amber Heard‘s marriage has finally come to an end. For the first time in a long time, the two came to an agreement and reached a settlement in their divorce — the day before they were supposed to go to court.
The exes released a carefully worded joint statement, which read, “Our relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love. Neither party has made false accusations for financial gain. There was never any intent of physical or emotional harm. Amber wishes the best for Johnny in the future. Amber will be donating financial proceeds from the divorce to a charity. There will be no further public statements about this matter.”
So, nutshell: Amber withdrew her petition for a domestic violence restraining order and the case — which was meant to be heard by a judge on Aug. 17 — was dismissed with prejudice, meaning she can never re-file it. But what’s more telling is that Johnny clearly did not want to be deposed. The timing of that leaked video (of a violent Depp freaking out on Heard) likely helped move the settlement along because it was so damaging. But perhaps both Depp and Heard were just done with it all and the exhaustive process was stressing them both out and they just wanted it to be over.
Heard settled for $7 million, a seemingly small amount but still a decent chunk of change, considering how Depp’s earnings are broken down. It also backs up what Amber has been saying all along, that she wasn’t trying to publicize Johnny’s alleged abuse for financial gain; rather, she wanted an abuser to admit what he did to her or, at the very least, be made aware of. With him not being deposed, that info will never be made public but we now all know he’s not the delightful little scamp we all thought he was.
Here’s hoping Amber gets past this, both personally and professionally, because her life over the past couple years must’ve been hell. As for Johnny, it would be in his best interest to get the help he so desperately needs — ultimately for himself, but also his family and any future girlfriends.
