The Met Gala is the most fashionable event of the year. Designers and celebrities join forces, wear insane outfits and sometimes there’s even a scuffle in an elevator. Last year’s event was over-the-top, what with Rihanna looking like an haute bird and Beyonce dripping in jewels. But this year, it’s high brow is going high tech.

That’s because Apple is presenting the affair, titled “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.” You might remember that last year’s event was themed “China: Through the Looking Glass,” which we still don’t really 100 per cent understand. But at least with Apple at the helm, we kind of have an idea of what the event might look like. Picture it, Selena Gomez on the red carpet wearing an old iPhone.

Or Ryan Reynolds, standing beside his doting wife Blake Lively, wearing a couture iPhone that their daughter James made.

Ultimately, the goal of each look at the upcoming Met Gala is two-fold: designs should be half handmade couture, and half machine-made clothing that incorporates technology in some way. Perhaps the theme should have been “Fashion: Rise of the Machines.”

While we were half-kidding about the possible costumes above, there’s a good chance we’ll see some pretty crazy ensembles accented by Hermes’ Apple Watch. And we’ll definitely get to see Taylor Swift, Idris Elba and the super-handsome Apple Chief Design Officer Jony Ive, because they are co-hosts of the event.

It takes place on May 2, 2016, but in the meantime, check out the best and worst from last year. We think you’ll agree that Anne Hathaway, Sarah Jessica Parker and Madonna should hire new stylists this time around.
