Taste tests are fun when the foods you’re asked to consume are (relatively) delicious, like hot chocolate, baked goods (mmmm, chocolate almond croissants) and international Cheetos. But when you’re handed a weirdly shaped can filled to the brim with surströmming, you know there’s trouble headed your way.

Some folks at BuzzFeed volunteered to have their tongues, noses and stomachs assaulted with surströmming, which, for those who don’t know, is basically raw herring that’s been fermenting for at least half a year. A year. The traditional Swedish dish is said to have one of the strongest smells in the world and, well, we believe this to be true based on the reactions in the video above.
