You can never predict peoples’ reactions, especially when it comes to the Internet. Case in point: when the New York Times published a recipe recommending putting peas — yep, the same green peas you’ve been eating for life, not some weird version of peas that might justify a snap reaction — in guacamole.

Things went bats**t crazy. It even got its own hashtag on Twitter: #peagate. In terms of things to freak out about, especially in today’s volatile environment (shootings, financial turmoil, discrimination of all kinds), this was an odd battle to fight. After all, this is coming from the country that deep-fries every known food into oblivion. Who knew there were so many guacamole purists out there?

Some replies were simple and to the point. Peas and thanks.

Others went for humour.

Some took it entirely too seriously. 

No viral event can happen without a Kanye reference.

Even President Obama stepped in.

Now that all the pea haters have gotten it out, hopefully this is the end of #peagate. Onto bigger and more important things. Like world peas.
