In a turn of events we didn’t see coming, Kensington Palace has made an official statement on the rumours that a feud exists between new sisters-in-law Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton. The Palace’s official stance is that the Duchess of Sussex and the Duchess of Cambridge are bffs 4 evah, but the fact that they made a statement is a bit…odd. We’re not saying there is a feud, but we’re pretty sure that even if Meghan and Kate were hurling 500-year-old family heirlooms at one another every time they were in the same room, the Palace wouldn’t say that either.

The rumours of friction between the pair started with a dress fitting for Meghan’s wedding to Prince Harry. According to The Sun, Princess Charlotte’s dress fitting ‘left Kate in tears.’ This fitting took place just after Kate had delivered Prince Louis, which means her being in tears shouldn’t be that shocking. Hormones are no joke. But it’s more fun to blame Meghan, right?

There’s nothing the press likes more than pitting two women against one another and Meghan is an easy villain. She doesn’t look like the other royals. She’s a divorcee. She’s American. She’s an actor. She’s has opinions. The horror!

The Sun is also reporting that Kate chastised Meghan after the ex-actor was ‘rude to staff.’ This incident seemed to be the last straw, with the Palace issuing a retort that, “This never happened.” The Palace does not mess around when it comes to the matter of manners.

It’s not much of a statement, but the fact that the rumour was addressed in any way is quite telling.

The recent news about Harry and Meghan deciding to relocate to Frogmore House is only adding more fuel to the feud rumours, as if everyone who likes the in-laws should live down the street from them.

Meghan and Kate aren’t wearing matching friendship bracelets and posing for photo ops every other day, so they must hate one another, right? Or, it could be that they’re two women who have stuff to do (raise families, travel the world, deal with husbands who are probably high maintenance) and don’t have time to convince the press that they’re the Banger Sisters. Meghan’s close, CHOSEN friend Priyanka Chopra got married this past weekend and Meghan wasn’t able to attend the festivities, yet no one is chalking up her absence to a feud. But a lack of photos between Meghan and Kate has the UK choosing sides like it’s Brexit 2.0.

There are a few ways to look at the Palace’s decision to get involved. It may have come at the prompting of Prince Harry, who previously broke tradition when he and Meghan were dating to issue an official statement telling the press to back off Markle. He phrased it more eloquently, but it was the royal version of a drunken boyfriend shouting that he was going to fight everyone in the bar.

The other person who may have called for the announcement was the Queen. Markle has been inundated with negative press since day one, first with racist headlines from the British press, then with the seemingly never-ending ‘exclusive’ interviews with her extended family. The Queen couldn’t do much to control those two situations, but a rumour about Kate and Meghan, who we know the Queen is fond of, is a narrative she could attempt to guide. With a baby on the way, we’re happy to see that the Palace is taking some steps to reduce stress for Meghan.
