After last week’s episode of Pretty Little Liars, which featured the return of Jenna Marshall and her keen ability to identify virtually everyone she’s ever met by their sigh, fans were promised that this week’s episode would include a marriage proposal for one of the Liars. This week’s episode delivered but ended with a cliffhanger. Sigh.
In addition to the ring popping, last night included a few familiar faces returning to Rosewood, including Sara Harvey, who quickly became besties with Jenna. As Emily so aptly pointed out, “Who even knew Sarah Harvey was still in town?” Good question, Emily. Expect the return of many B and C list characters to come, during the final season.
Characters like Noel Kahn. What’s this guy’s deal, again? It’s never really been clear. He dated Aria, then Mona, then Jenna and he kinda helped Alison while she was on the run, but mostly, Noel Kahn (never just Noel) has always been a guy that pops up sporadically and remains hazy on where his allegiances lie. Instead, he acts as the an unnecessary cog in the machine that churns out answers to questions like, who killed whom and why do we care?
Okay, so back to the proposal. It was a pretty safe bet that it wasn’t going to be Emily, because #foreveralone and all that. Hanna just broke up with Jordan, so unless he’s a glutton for punishment, we don’t see him flying back to Rosewood in his private jet anytime soon. That just left Spencer and Aria.
Spencer spent most of the episode running around Rosewood in her funny pants looking for Caleb, who begged her to get back together with him and then disappeared when she asked for time. We feel like Caleb doesn’t *get* how asking for forgiveness works. Usually the one asking doesn’t run away. There was the chance that Caleb would return from wherever he’s staying–which should be, but likely isn’t a place where he can apply for a new job since he’s been unemployed since Episode 1–and propose to Spencer. But, no.
Thankfully, Caleb’s absence did allow for Spencer to drop her Toby One-Kenobi line, which was brilliant.
So, Ezria. After receiving a call from the phone number of Ezra’s dead girlfriend Nicole, and then deleting all evidence, Aria was feeling a bit guilty. The logical explanation is that someone bought Nicole’s phone from the people that kidnapped her, but the Pretty Little Liars explanation is more likely that Nicole is going to show up, alive and in love with Ezra, at any moment. To further the likelihood of this happening, Ezra has now proposed to Aria. We’ll be super humble about Nicole’s reappearance when it inevitably happens. Bonus points if it’s on Ezra and Aria’s wedding day.
Ezra is so serious about his commitment to Aria, who he’s been back together with for five minutes after five years apart, that he even talked to Aria’s parents about getting engaged. Scratch that. He talked to Nicole’s parents. Well, that’s good too?
Here’s the thing(s) with Ezra proposing. After many seasons of feeling icky about watching a teacher have a relationship with his student, Aria graduated literally and figuratively into adulthood, allowing us to finally let our ‘it’s just tv’ mindset take over and enjoy the relationship. Then they broke up. The TV gods giveth, and the TV gods taketh away.
Now that Aria and Ezra are full-blown adults and back together, why the need to get married so soon? Aria hasn’t even told her friends that she and Ezra are again dating and let’s not forget that Aria is only 23. Plus, she just helped bury a body. Old Aria would have told Ezra. New Aria should know that shielding Mr. Fitz (Gerald) never ended up protecting him in the long run.
Now the question is, will she say yes? And more importantly, who will she choose as her maid of honour?
