The Duchess of Sussex is getting the royal treatment — in a big way. Not only is Meghan going on her first royal engagement with Queen Elizabeth significantly sooner than Duchess Kate did (we hate to compare but it is worth noting), but she’s also being invited to experience something no other fresh, doe-eyed royal has ever done. For Meghan and The Queen’s work day next week up in Cheshire, Megs gets to ride on the fancy train with her grandmother-in-law.
Considering the monarch’s personal train is reserved for senior royals only and Her Majesty, Prince Philip, Prince Charles, Duchess Camilla and their respective staff are the only people who are entitled to use it, it’s kind of a big deal.
According to Hello!, Prince William is believed to have only ridden it once, back in 2003 on his birthday tour when he travelled to Wales. But neither Meg’s husband, Prince Harry, nor Will’s wife, Kate, have ever been on it — at least in an official capacity.
Wow. What a huge honour this is for Meghan, this giant, public seal of approval. Maybe this is The Queen’s way of shutting down the racist haters, squashing any rumours people are trying to make happen, or letting Meghan know how truly accepted she is, especially given all that she gave up for Harry and the BRF. Or perhaps there are no ulterior motives; she just genuinely likes the breath of fresh air Meghan brings and simply enjoys chatting with her.
And what better way to enjoy a ladies’ day out than on what Hello! describes as “Buckingham Palace on wheels,” what with its bedrooms with ensuites, smoking room and dining room that seats 12? While it’s an expensive ride, it’s also an EXPENSIVE RIDE, costing taxpayers £900,000 in 2017 when it was used a mere 14 times.
First, it was Her Majesty’s dogs that warmed up to Meghan, now The Queen herself. Harry’s time as his grandmother’s favourite has been quite a lovely run but it seems like his time’s up. The Queen clearly has a new favourite and she doesn’t care who knows it.
