The world was introduced to the newest member of the Royal Family this week with the highly anticipated birth of Prince Harry and wife Meghan Markle’s first child. Markle gave birth to a baby boy on Monday, with the new parents proudly showing off their bundle of joy on May 8, when Harry held the baby (damn right) and Meghan wore white because adult diapers are your post-pregnancy friend (get it, girl). The couple also announced the baby’s name that day, with the Royal Family’s official website quickly adding Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor’s name to his page. Unfortunately, his parents were identified as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
That would be his aunt and uncle.
To be clear: William and Kate did not have a fourth baby. At the time the announcement was made, they were likely somewhere doing charity work, not holding hands, and answering questions about their nephew, while being careful to not give away any details about lil’ Archie.
Incorrectly naming Archie’s parents is an understandable and very easy mistake to make. William and Kate already have three kids, so whoever updates the royal website has already done so multiple times for Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. There’s probably a template and someone forgot to swap out Cambridge for Sussex. Or, Meghan and Kate really do hate each another and this was Kate’s way of stealing the limelight back from Meghan. Kate studied computer hacking at Cambridge, right? That’s it. We’ve cracked the case.
The royal gaffe was quickly corrected, but the internet never forgets, so there’s still a screen grab available to make everyone feel better then next time they type staring instead of starring.
Can you imagine Meghan’s reaction when she first heard there was a new royal scandal…and it had nothing to do with her family? If it was possible for your water to break after delivering a baby, that would have happened.
As is customary, Harry and Meghan held off on announcing Archie’s name until he met his great-grandmother, the Queen.
So many firsts in one week for the royal baby. Baby’s first photo opp. Baby’s first scandal. Baby’s first afternoon tea with the Queen. Wow little Archie really is just like every other baby (ha!).
