Ever since Chrissy Metz got the role of Kate on the hit new fall TV series This Is Us, it seems like all people want to talk about is her weight. That’s probably because the big arc of her character this season is actually all about losing weight, and in real life Metz has been pretty open about going along with that journey.
That’s why when news recently surfaced that Metz was contractually obligated to lose weight in real life, people jumped all over the news. Since then there’s been a bit of a plot twist though; as it turns out, weight loss isn’t actually in Metz’s contract at all. It’s just something that she and creator Dan Fogelman are constantly talking about as the story evolves.
“Whether or not I lose weight or stay the same, it’s purely a choice of mine for health,” Metz told TVLine, clarifying the situation. “Not because I think that plus size, curvy, voluptuous, big bodies aren’t attractive — because I think they’re awesome and sexy… I’m not selling out the big girls. I don’t do that. That’s not me.”
On the show, Kate recently made the decision to get gastric bypass surgery after some turbulence on an airplane made her rethink her life. That storyline continues in this week’s midseason finale, “Last Christmas,” when Kate and her mom Rebecca (Mandy Moore) attend a doctor’s appointment to discuss the surgery.
Although we don’t want to give anything away, expect some pretty big feels as Rebecca realizes how damaged Kate is when it comes to food, and what kind of part she played in that when her daughter was younger.
Meanwhile we’re just waiting for Kate and her former flame Toby (Chris Sullivan) to finally get back together after Kate broke up with him for giving up on his diet. After all of the grand gestures that guy has made, we have a feeling it won’t be long before he gets back on the diet bandwagon in order to win Kate and her baby kale salads back.
This Is Us wraps up the first half of its season on Tuesday, Dec. 9 at 9 p.m. ET on CTV.
