Nothing is the harbinger of winter quite like Starbucks’ holiday cups. Once the coffee chain starts rolling these out every year, you know it’s getting close to snow, bone-chilling cold and biting winds.

Well, they’re back now, and they’re…red. This year, the bright cherry red normally associated with the brand is present at the top of the cup, and it darkens ever-so-slightly into a cranberry colour at the bottom.

Starbucks

Last year’s cups featured abstract snowflakes and two other eye-catching designs, but this year we’re just seeing red.

So why the minimalism?

Starbucks Vice-President of Design & Content Jeffrey Fields explains, “We have anchored the design with the classic Starbucks holiday red that is bright and exciting. The ombré creates a distinctive dimension, fluidity and weightedness.”

Alllllrighty, then! We prefer the beautiful fall cups, in all honesty, just because they were so damn beautiful:

One bonus for Starbucks visitors this year: from November 1 to 16, if you use the hashtags #redcup or #redcups on Twitter and Instagram, not only will a red cup emoji appear (!), but you’ll be entered to win a $500 red cup eGift.

Looking at these red cups has put us in a holiday sort of mood. Do they do the same for you?
