There isn’t a magic formula that exists that ensures a woman will be impressed by a man. While some might find a person’s jokes hilarious, another might think they’re annoying. A guy that can play the drums. Hot–for some. Others might find it’s just noise. Of course, there are qualities that most women can appreciate: the ability to remember the little things, to do something without being asked, maybe a dude that can cook a decent meal. But eat one?
According to a study out of Cornell University, men consume 93 per cent more pizza when trying to impress women. Researchers tracked 133 adults who ate at an all-you-can-eat Italian restaurant. And it was there that they found that men ate significantly more pizza and salad when eating with a woman than with another man.
Kevin Kniffin, the study’s lead author, said that the findings “suggest that men tend to overeat to show off,” and that by overeating, men show that “they possess extraordinary skills, advantages, and/or surplus energy in degrees that are superior to other men.” Which is kind of ridiculous-sounding, right? But we guess it could make sense. When out with a woman, particularly one he is interested in, a guy is going to show some restraint. So instead of opting for a 20-oz. rib steak, lobster tail and a loaded baked potato, a few slices and a side Caesar is way less caveman of him—but shows he’s still got a healthy appetite. Orrrr, he just want us to know he can eat a lot. Because sexy?
Funnily enough, women’s eating habits remained the same, whether they were dining with a guy or gal. The women did acknowledge that when eating with men, they felt “rushed” or left feeling like they had overeaten, even though researchers found no evidence that they did.
Kniffin’s conclusion: “People should calm down when eating with members of the opposite sex.” Lesson learned. We hope.
