The Tonight Show made history twice on Monday night, first by leaving the iconic Studio 6B and filming the entire episode in the New York subway system and secondly by dedicating the entire show to BTS. Showing just how massive the K-Pop movement has become in North America, The Tonight Show’s ode to BTS on Monday night airs just 24 hours before James Corden gets behind the wheel on Carpool Karaoke with the seven-piece group from Korea. K-Pop is here to stay and it’s taking over late night.Fallon opened Monday’s show by walking out of The Tonight Show’s headquarters at 30 Rockefeller and into the New York subway system, delivering his opening monologue for a small audience of subway riders. Fallon was later joined by BTS, including RM, Jin, Jungkook, V, SUGA, Jimin, and J-Hope, who revealed on Monday that this was their first time riding the subway in New York, a mode of transportation that is ionic in their native South Korea thanks to Home Alone 2: Lost In New York. “That’s a classic in Korea,” said RM.[video_embed id='1906487']RELATED: BTS drop their latest album 'Map of the Soul: 7'[/video_embed]The group touched on their goals pre-BTS, which included becoming businessmen, actors, gamers, producers, tennis players, and saxophonists. The guys also revealed what their first meetings were like, which for RM and Jungkook included underwear. “When I first saw him [Jungkook], I was only wearing underwear,” reveals RM. “I was in the house, I was in my home and he came and said he was the new member and I was only wearing underwear,” laughs RM. “Yeah, that was the first impression.”The group also talked about their first showcase where they performed for 300 fans, a number that is small in comparison to their stadium performances now, but still holds significance for the group. “I cried after the show,” said Jungkook. “Everyone cried,” added Jimin.
While riding the subway, Fallon asked the band questions posed by their fan ARMY and found out who is on the band’s list that they have yet to perform in front of. You can learn the most interesting things riding public transportation, including the fact that John Cena is a huge BTS fan. “We want to see him. He’s a big fan of us and we’re a big fan [of him],” said RM, adding “We were always watching WWE when we were 13.”
The group eventually made their way to the iconic Katz’s deli, where they tried pastrami sandwiches for the first time and admitted that When Harry Met Sally is not as popular in South Korea as Home Alone.
Following their lunch break, The Tonight Show shut down Grand Central Station for BTS, who performed their new single “On” in the iconic and still working terminal. The group wore coordinating black and white outfits and were backed by a group of dancers for the high energy performance. Let’s hope most of the riders connecting through New York were K-Pop fans or at least got a free voucher for Wetzel’s Pretzels.
