All Love Actually fans know this scene well. Keira Knightley‘s character Juliet surprises her new hubsand’s best friend Mark (who has always been aloof towards her) with a banoffee pie in hopes to grow their friendship, and to see some of the video footage he shot of their wedding. Much to Mark’s embarrassment, Juliet finds the tape and discovers that Mark hasn’t been cold to her because he doesn’t like her… in fact, it’s the complete opposite. Here’s the clip to jog your memory.
In a recent interview with BBC Radio 1’s Ali Plumb, Plumb asked Keira if she had any fashion regrets — specifically mentioning the hat Juliet wears in this very scene. “I was actually very grateful for that hat. I have a lifetime of gratitude for that hat,” she said. Why? Because it was covering a “humongous” zit. “Do you know why the hat was there? I had a massive spot in the middle of my forehead. This is the problem with being 17 and being in films,” the actress laughed.
“I mean, and it was humongous, so there was no choice but we had to find a hat to cover it. Because there was no lighting, there was no makeup that would cover it… And that’s the thing that I really remember,” she continued. “It’s funny how you just remember extreme embarrassment isn’t it? I remember like coming in in the morning and being like ‘Oh wow, I’ve got another head on my head. What are we going to do about this?'”
We’ve all been there, Keira. The zit that no amount of makeup or lighting will conceal, so you hope that a cap or some bangs or an alarmingly bright red lip will distract from the monstrosity on your face. So us and Keira? Practically the same. We just weren’t starring in now classic, beloved Christmas movies at the time.
