Winter is coming back Sunday night and we can’t wait! The vicious battle to rule the seven kingdoms continues as Game Of Thrones kicks off its highly anticipated fifth season. And while GoT addicts patiently count down the minutes until the premiere, we got to thinking. Our pals from Westeros have sure changed a lot since the first season.
The unpredictably ruthless twists and turns of the show’s plot have taken its toll on most of the characters that we’ve grown to love over the past five years. Who would have thought copious amounts of war, lies, greed, murder and deception would do that to people?
In the spirit of five years of throne battling, let’s play a little “Where are they now: Game of Thrones style.” (Note: Put on your earphones and click here. You should have this pumping in the background.)
*Spoiler alert!! If you’re not caught up you’re going to want to turn away now. Perhaps a little GoT BINGO instead?
The years have not been kind to these ‘Game of Thrones’ characters
Tyrion LannisterThe charming and witty Tyrion Lannister is slightly the worse for wear after five seasons. Following the vicious Battle of Blackwater, two trials and some crappy treatment by his family and mistress, everyone's favourite dwarf is now scarred, angry and worn down.HBO
Ned StarkThis is still upsetting. Everyone loved Ned Stark, the head of House Stark. He was honest, noble and a true family man. So of course he was executed for treason by that evil little jerk King Joffrey after his political allies stabbed him in the back. He is now just a head on a spear.HBO
Robb StarkPoor Robb Stark. The brave, noble King of the North, who took over as the head of House Stark after Ned's death, was murdered alongside his wife, mother and much of his army. Rough is an understatement. Robb's head was cut off and replaced with his Direwolf's. A real different look from season one.HBO
Jaime LannisterThe smug, sister-loving Jaime Lannister from season one hasn't had an easy go of it. And it serves him right. After a bout in Stark captivity, Lannister had his hand hacked off by Locke before returning to King's Landing. He now sports a prosthetic gold one and isn't as much of a pretty boy.HBO
Arya StarkIn five seasons, Arya has gone from being the sweet baby daughter of Ned and Catelyn Stark to an independent, sword-swinging, bad-ass warrior. Sure she's mistaken for a boy most of the time, but we dare you to call her on it.HBO
Bran StarkWhen we first met Bran, he was the innocent young son of Ned and Catelyn Stark. Jaime Lannister pushed him out of a window, leaving him paralyzed. Bran is now older and although he can't walk, he has new abilities that just might make up for those he lost.HBO
Jon SnowJon Snow's appearance hasn't changed drastically in five seasons. Since leaving his adopted family in Winterfell to join the Night's Watch, he's starting to look a little worn. Guarding the Wall in those frosty temperatures will do that. He's scruffier, dirtier, scratched and more disheveled. We’re ok with that.HBO
Joffrey BaratheonThis is one change that we GoT addicts took pleasure in. Although Joffrey was an incredible villain, the sinister prince who became king in season one finally saw his demise last season after being poisoned at his own wedding. How's that for a new look?HBO
Cersei LannisterMaybe evil and incest is the secret to Cersei keeping her looks for five seasons of GoT. The Queen Regent of the Seven Kingdoms has used cushy palace living and sinister manipulation to remain unscathed. She has hers coming though, don't you worry.HBO
Khal DrogoDrogo was gone too soon. The fearsome Dothraki warrior proved he had a big heart in season one after he married Daenerys. After an infection and some bad blood spell treatment that led to a coma, Daenerys ended her beloved’s suffering with a pillow and burned him in a fire that would lead to her rebirth. HBO
Daenerys TargaryenIn five seasons Dany has graduated from a nervous, submissive, push-over under her late brother Viserys, to being a strong, confident hard-ass and the Queen of House of Targaryen. She's now a serious butt kicker and plans to claim the iron throne. We all want to see that, right?HBO
Games of Thrones Season 5 Premieres Sunday at 9PM ET on HBO Canada.
