Just when we thought Hollywood had hit a creative low point by making films about every single video game, toy, board game and ’80s TV show ever created, things just managed to get a whole lot more uninspired. There is now an Emoji film in the works.

Sony Pictures Animation just outbid Warner Bros and Paramount to buy a pitch for a feature film about the collection of little smiley faces, creatures and ideograms that we use on our smartphones and social media (which apparently lack intellectual property rights).

The Emoji filmmakers are Anthony Leondis, the guy who directed Kung Fu Panda: Series of the Masters and Eric Siegel, a former producer on the TV show Men at Work.

Who knows, it could turn out to be like The Lego Movie and be surprisingly great. But it really does sound like a pile of…
