Staying motivated can often be the biggest barrier to overcome when trying to lead a healthier lifestyle. Now, a new app that the Ontario government is investing in will help to do just that.
Carrot Rewards is a free phone app that allows users to earn points for real life reward programs — like Aeroplan and Petro-Points — just by taking active steps towards staying healthy. Activities such as walking a set number of steps, quitting smoking or taking a quiz can give the user points that go towards their consumer reward programs.
In addition to tracking and rewarding activities, the app also provides advice for a healthy lifestyle, including nutritional information and learning how to budget.
Created with the goal of reducing chronic diseases and promoting healthy and active living, the app was developed in 2015 by Carrot Insights, who worked alongside the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Diabetes Canada, the YMCA and select loyalty partners like SCENE, Aeroplan, Petro-Points, Drop and More Rewards. And now, the app just received an additional $1.5 million from the Ontario government.
The Carrot Rewards app is not only beneficial in the personal lives of users, but it’s also being used to promote healthy workplaces. Toronto resident Jocelyne Beaulieu has been using the Carrot Rewards app for more than a month and says that it’s a great tool for putting an incentive on movement at the office. “In my workplace, there are some people using the app and it’s encouraged us to move more,” says Beaulieu. “Some of our meetings have even turned into ‘walk and talks’ so we can get more steps in during times when we would have typically been sedentary in the workplace. It’s definitely brought some healthy competition into the work environment.”
The Carrot Rewards app is currently available in British Columbia, Ontario as well as Newfoundland and Labrador, so if you have access to it, start gathering those reward points!
