Remember the good ol’ days of the 1700s when women weren’t considered people, slavery was a thing and no one had indoor plumbing? No? You don’t remember smallpox and the beauty of hunting and foraging for every meal? Oh, yeah! That’s because you were probably born in the 20th/21st century where we’ve progressed FAR past that.
Well, in Donald Trump’s book, that seems to be about the time that America was ‘great.’ We’re not political analysts or anything, but that just doesn’t seem right to us. Thank goodness we’re up here in Canada.
But there are a lot of people (about 300 million) who aren’t safe up here in the best country in the world, and instead of having the luxury of sitting back and watching the election with a bucket of popcorn, they actually have to worry about the guy from The Apprentice becoming their new leader.
Cue the ironic resistance! A group of concerned American citizens who actually like the progress America has made in the past 240 years, started a little organization to highlight the absurdity of Trump’s views. They sold ‘Make America Great Britain Again’ hats in the style of Trump’s ‘Make America Great Again’ hat. Ah yes, remember the days of the commonwealth? (Actually, we do, because Canada is still pretty tight with GB and the Queen, but you get it).
Not only can you wear your disdain for Donald J. Trump on your head, the proceeds from the Indiegogo sale went towards campaigns that would make the Donald furious. Make America Great Britain Again donates to the National Council of La Raza (advocates for progressive immigration reform), Planned Parenthood, and the Council on American-Islamic Relations. All three charities work in areas Trump has expressed as being ‘the problem with America.’ As they say in their video: “we need to do more than deal him an electoral defeat. We need to support the organizations working for an inclusive and diverse America.” Preach!
It’s always nice (and funny) to see Americans opposing Trump. Plus, the hat sales actually helped the people hurt by his campaign! What a great way to prove America doesn’t need to regress back to the dark ages to be better.
Social media has taken up “Make America Great Britain Again” in recent days too. With the likes of Bette Midler Instagramming support for the Queen’s electoral bid.
So, if you were lucky enough to snatch one, wear those hats with ironic pride! Meanwhile, us Canadians will just sit up here, slightly nervous, but enjoying our popcorn… And our fabulous prime minister.
