Never has there been a fashion great who didn’t take risks. The forefront of style is reserved for those who regularly experiment with bold new trends and looks. When it works, and the spotlight finds something it likes, it’s brilliant. The cameras flash, the style world lights up and a wave of inspirations ripples out.
And when it doesn’t work, well, sometimes the spotlight likes that too.
We’re giving “credit” this week to the red carpet regulars who help keep fashion fresh, even when it’s at their own sartorial expense. From the doll-like dress on Lupita Nyong’o to J.Lo’s disco-ball-like number, these outfits are proof that even the fashion greats fail to impress from time to time. Consider this the inspiration you need to bust out that questionable yellow maxi dress you’ve been dying to try.
These stars all tried something new on the red carpet…and failed
Jennifer LopezWe’re just not sure about this look. Because, the thing is, this is Jennifer Lopez we’re talking about—if even she resembles a disco ball while wearing it, then what hope do the rest of us have? We do approve of that burnt orange paneling for fall, though.Getty Images
Justine SkyeThis frilly, fringe-y number looks fun to wear. And good for Justine Skye for having fun in it! But you know what else is fun to wear? A onesie with a butt flap in it. Sometimes this fun is best had at home.Getty Images
Coco RochaThis wants to be a teal, turtleneck sweater, but instead has been Frankensteined together into a peculiar cutout jumpsuit. Not even Coco Rocha can tame this wild one. Getty Images
Farrah AbrahamSometimes the red carpet makes us ask “what the what?” This is one of those times. Farrah Abraham, star of MTV’s Teen Mom OG landed on this Wonder Woman getup. So, yeah, like we said: what the what? Getty Images
Emma StoneAttending the 73rd Venice Film Festival, Emma Stone faded away in this moss green and pink floral number. We would’ve preferred a bright colour to set off her stunning green eyes, not these ruffled bell sleeves and mustard yellow shoes.Getty Images
Ashley GrahamOne of the many to embrace the sheer gown over undergarments trend this week was model Ashley Graham. The level of bedazzling and amount of skin shown reminded us of a former Beyoncé Met Ball look that no one but the Queen herself should attempt to recreate.Getty Images
CassieSinger Cassie’s peak-a-boo-blazer look is loud, but so are her gold lame pants. And even louder than them is the highlighter yellow hair. This is just a shouting match when it’s all put together. A camisole worn under the blazer would take this entire look down one notch. Getty Images
Heidi KlumHeidi Klum in a red suede mini dress. How could it go wrong? Well, it did. From the random zipper cutouts to the giant gold hoops, this look gets a failing grade from our fashion judges. Getty Images
JWowwJWoww wore a scoop neck halter with cream, slouchy knee-high boots out this week. Somebody took a picture of it. And now, we get to share this laugh. Ha! Getty Images
JoJoThese brocade pants make singer Jojo’s legs look like furniture—toned furniture, sure, but furniture nonetheless. And what’s with the bracelets over the shirt sleeve? Is this a new trend? Getty Images
Lupita Nyong'oLupita Nyong’o looks cute in this striped mini dress. So cute, in fact, that she looks like a tiny doll, wrapped up in ribbon and ready to fly off the shelves. Maybe she needs some jewelry or a clutch to remind us she’s real. Getty Images
Jess WeixlerActress Jess Weixler looked like a bad reincarnation of I Love Lucy in this yellow brocade dress. With the release of her latest movie, Sister Cities, the star should have a number of chances to redeem herself shortly. We’ll be watching.Getty Images
Michelle TrachtenbergAh, we see Michelle Trachtenberg kept a couple looks from her old Gossip Girl wardrobe. The star’s figure is lost under the loose shape of this maxi dress, and no number of hipster necklaces will change that. Getty Images
Nick CannonNow, we love an all-white look, and Nick Cannon definitely went all white at the VMAs, but we don’t love an all-white look when it’s baggy shorts, a baggy sleeveless tee, and a headscarf. We’re entertained by it—highly—but we don’t love it. Getty Images
Zoe SaldanaZoe Saldana, star of Star Trek Beyond, isn’t boldly going where no man has gone before with this lacey black dress with asymmetrical cutouts. The ruffled hemline, leather sash and beading do set it apart, but not in the way intended. Getty Images
Alicia KeysWhile we’re loving Alicia Keys’ make-up-free appearances (seriously, what a stunner), we wish she would’ve taken the same “less is more” approach to this outfit. The sheer ruffled top, printed skirt, and loud headband all clash. Let’s go back to basics. Getty Images
Taylor Marie HillRemember making fake old pirate maps by burning the edges of the paper when you were a kid? That’s what somebody did to Victoria Secret Angel Taylor Hill’s dress. That or it fell into the gorilla enclosure. Too soon?Getty Images
