Sweaters are essential when the temperature drops, but it doesn’t take long for that rotation of cozy knits to feel a little uninspired. The good news is there’s no need to sacrifice fashion for function anymore. When it comes to the all-essential winter sweater, instead of opting for your basic solid-coloured crewneck, try to think outside of the box. Consider sweaters with embellishments, texture, unique silhouettes, bold colours and prints; that way, your sweater does ALL the work for you.

Stylist Erica Wark highlights some of her favourite ways to make this cold-weather staple the focus of a fabulous outfit.

LOOK 1: SWEATER SET

It’s all about the details! Instead of pairing with your sweater with jeans, try wearing it with a pleated skirt for a fresh look.

LOOK 2: TEXTURED SWEATER

Texture, texture, texture! The off-cuff texture on this sweater adds an interesting element to an otherwise simple piece. If you love jeans, try a pair of wax-finished denim instead for an updated look.

LOOK 3: STRIPED SWEATER SET

Consider a sweater set this winter! They’re extremely versatile. This set in particular makes for a killer outfit and then each piece can easily be styled separately with other items in your wardrobe.

LOOK 4: FRINGE SWEATER

The fringe detail on this sweater adds a lot of interest and nice movement. Wear it with matching green pieces for a sleek monochromatic look. Just remember to vary your textures when putting a tonal outfit together.
