The world was shocked this week when A-listers Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt announced they will be divorcing. The couple, who first got together in 2005, are now facing a new scandal with TMZ reporting that allegations of abuse against their children could have been the catalyst for the divorce filings.
Jolie is petitioning for physical custody of the couple’s six children, who are all minors, with Pitt being granted visitation rights. In a new report that was released this morning, TMZ is claiming that Jolie’s quick filing, which came only days after the couple’s two year wedding anniversary, was spurred by a specific event.
According to TMZ, Pitt became intoxicated on a private plane last Wednesday, with Jolie and their children on board. The site is claiming that Pitt became aggressive towards the children, causing a concerned witness to call Child Protective Services once the plane landed. TMZ says the couple have both been interviewed with the investigation ongoing, but now the LAPD is speaking out against the allegations.
The Hollywood Reporter has published an an article disputing TMZ’s claims, with a quote from Sgt. Barry Montgomery of the LAPD. The officer states that the police department is not investigating Pitt, saying, “We have no criminal investigation that we are actively pursuing. To my knowledge, [Pitt talking to police] never happened. And right now, that is where our office is. We are not investigating any case, nor do we have any allegations against Mr. Pitt. We understand how rumors get spun up and hopefully we can put a few of them to rest. We have no investigation involving Mr. Pitt.”
That’s not to say there is no investigation in the works. People Magazine reports, “that the L.A. County Department of Children and Family Services is looking into the incident… after Pitt allegedly got “verbally abusive” and “physical” with one of his and Angelina Jolie’s children.”
“The DCFS investigation is absolutely ongoing,” their source told the magazine. “Brad has been interviewed and is cooperating fully. The case remains open.”
Angelina Jolie has yet to make a public statement, but following the surprise announcement on Tuesday, rumors quickly began churning, with the finger first being pointed at Pitt’s Allied co-star Marion Cotillard. The French actor quickly released a statement saying that she did not have an affair with Pitt and revealed she is expecting her second child with her husband.
For his part, Pitt has spoken publicly, telling People Magazine on Tuesday “I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well being of our kids. I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time.”
The abuse allegations are a sobering new facet to what has already become a highly public separation, not surprising for the once golden couple of Hollywood. While it unfortunately doesn’t look like the events are going to play out in private, in any separation the hope is always that the well being of the children is what’s being put first.
