Scarlett Johansson has always been fiercely private, and her relationship with Romain Dauriac was a testament to that. They dated for a while, secretly got married, and had their daughter, Rose, and as with every other aspect of her personal life, kept it all on the DL. But then the couple split a few months back. Sad, but the same day reports of their separation came out, they were seen at an event together, making us all believe that if their marriage was over, they would be able to keep things friendly and amicable.
Oh, how things can change.
Earlier this week Johansson released a statement confirming the reports that she had filed for divorce. “As a devoted mother and private person and with complete awareness that my daughter will one day be old enough to read the news about herself, I would only like to say that I will never, ever be commenting on the dissolution of my marriage,” the statement read. “Out of respect for my desires as a parent and out of respect for all working moms, it is with kindness that I ask other parties involved and the media to do the same. Thank you.”
Seems reasonable enough. Dauriac, however, thought her statement was already a comment in itself and responded to E! News with his own statement.
“It is indeed unfortunate, especially for our daughter, that Scarlett filed in Court and made our personal differences so public. I would implore her to withdraw her action promptly and to go back, as uncomfortable as it might be, to the negotiating table. We are the parents of a lovely daughter whom we will continue to co-parent for many years and share her joys and sorrows as only a parent can.”
His response comes on the heels of the two trying to nail down a custody agreement for daughter Rose. Both are seeking residential custody of the two-year-old, which poses a problem since Dauriac lives in France and Johansson is based in New York.
Dauriac’s lawyer calls ScarJo’s request “laughable,” telling People his client “plans to petition the court to allow him and his daughter to move to France.” He adds: “He believes that her schedule makes it impossible for her to have physical custody — unless she intends to have her children raised by nannies and helpers.”
Scarlett has yet to respond to that, and since she’s a woman of her word, we likely won’t hear about something so personal from her mouth.
Regardless of where the child lives, both parents will have time with Rose. As long as their daughter is the priority, and she knows she’s loved, that’s all that matters. It’ll be tough, what with the distance and travel and Skype-ing, but if Scarlett and Romain don’t make this about them, and instead make it all about their girl, they can get through this.
