India just took pavement markings to a whole new level—literally.

The city of Ahmedabad is currently experimenting with a new kind of zebra cross walk design that makes it appear as though the road markings are actually coming off the ground. The purpose is to create cross walks that are more noticeable to drivers, since the traditional design doesn’t appear to be all that effective in preventing crashes (traffic-related deaths are on the rise in India). Call us crazy, but we think these would work:

The illusion is all the result of some clever shading and artistic trickery. Saumya Pandya Thakkar and Shakuntala Pandya were the ones who came up with the idea after seeing similar cross walks in China, according to India Times. The plan is to install them near schools and accident-prone areas.

Personally though, we just want to know when they’re coming to Canada.
