Thanks to the rise in social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, announcing major life events like engagements, new jobs and pregnancies have become a creative endeavor for many users. Re-imagined movie posters and pop songs with customized lyrics are often signs that big changes are on the way.
For B.C. couple Abbey and Devon Spittle, their commitment to revealing the birth of their daughter Poppy was one of the most creative and impressive entries we’ve seen in the announcement trend. It’s just so cute!
Set to Raffi’s “Down By The Bay,” the video opens with Abbey eating half a watermelon before getting in her van and driving to a lake or ‘bay.’ Using stop motion animation and 900 images, the video tracks Abbey’s pregnancy progresses throughout the short car ride until she arrives at the lake and pushes a button, with Poppy magically appearing in her arms (dressed up like a watermelon!). Forget storks, we like the watermelon theory.
Taking inspiration from the old wives tale that eating watermelon seeds will result in a baby, the couple’s creative video was uploaded last Wednesday and has already been viewed almost 300,000 times.
This isn’t the first time the Spittle’s have documented Abbey’s pregnancy using stop motion animation. For the birth of their son Bentley in 2013, the couple filmed Abbey gradually getting bigger as she ate a carton of ice cream, again using Raffi’s version of the song “Apples and Bananas.”
Once again, ice cream > storks.
We have a feeling these two babies are going to star in some very cool homemade videos over the next few years.
