You know that fruit that’s sitting on your counter, neglected and ridden with fruit flies? Well, you probably won’t be able to salvage it for fruit pies, or delicious jam. You ruined it, but it’s not dead and done.
Fruit Leather Rotterdam is tackling one of Rotterdam’s rising issues: food waste. According to the collective, “on a single day in one of the outdoor markets in and around Rotterdam, vendors throw away approximately 3,500 kilograms of rotten or ‘unsellable’ fruits and vegetables.”
The group of designers is taking this spoiled fruit and transforming it into leather by mashing, cooking and then drying the rotten fruit.
The objective is to show that this new “fruit leather” can be used for a variety of projects, which they hope will reduce the amount of food waste seen in Rotterdam (and by extension, the world).
Fruit for thought.
