It doesn’t get much more heart-warming than this. In a touching clip shared by the BBC, we meet Des and Mona Manahan, an elderly couple from Ireland — and your new relationship inspiration.
As the sight began to deteriorate in her left eye, Mona found help from husband Des in tending to her makeup needs. The couple — who were seeking a makeup look for Mona to wear at a party — stumbled upon Rosie O’Driscoll, a Benefit counter makeup artist at UK department store Debenhams. That’s when 84-year-old Des told Rosie of Mona’s vision loss and shakiness.
“Des took the brushes from my hand, and wanted to have a try,” Rosie shared, “If you just see the way he holds the brushes, he’s a natural.” It’s a genuinely inspiring sight to behold, and shows it’s never too late to learn a new skill, and that there are plenty of ways to help your loved ones when they’re beginning to struggling with everyday tasks.
Des later began attending makeup classes with Rosie to hone his skills, and is now Mona’s go-to guy. On their preferred aesthetic, Des says, “Mona and I both agree on one thing… and that is that less is more.” On top of a touching closeness, sounds like they’ve also got complementary taste. But Mona knows she doesn’t need makeup to keep his heart, “He thinks I’m lovely as I am,” she shares proudly. It’s not hard to see the genuine affection between these two, and having been married for an impressive 56 years, they may just be the definition of true love.
Their story even captured the heart of Mario Dedivanovic, makeup artist and collaborator to none other than Kim Kardashian, who extended an invite to the pair to one of his London masterclasses.
It’s a refreshing clip, and it’s great to see it gain traction in a news cycle more used to giving us the worst news possible. Plus, it’s sure to melt the hardest of hearts. Check it out for yourself, but be warned — you’ll have to have your waterproof mascara on for this one.
