We are definitely advocates for slathering sunscreen all over our bodies (can’t forget that SPF), but sometimes, sunburns just happen. That’s why, when Cindie Allen-Stewart shared her solution to the achy, hot redness caused by the unforgiving sun, we were all ears. Using a menthol shaving cream (Gillette, in this case), Allen-Stewart applied a thick layer of the foam onto her burn and let it sit for 30 minutes without rubbing it in. After you let the product work its magic, you’re meant to rinse off the dried excess in the bath or shower.
The coolest part about this off-label usage for a can of Gillette Foamy Menthol? Allen-Stewart says the sensation actually feels like the shaving foam is drawing the heat out of your skin. According to Allure, it’s dermatologist approved too. Howard Sobel, a NYC-based dermatologist tells the publication, “Menthol has a cooling effect, which will help calm the discomfort of a sunburn. If there is aloe in the shaving cream, it will work as an anti-inflammatory, and help relieve the irritation of burnt skin.”
If you need to, Allen-Stewart says you can repeat the treatment on the second day, and says that the burn usually disappears after the second treatment. Apparently, there is no peeling involved and she uses the method on her children as well. If her photos are anything to go by, we’re impressed.
While you should always use sunscreen, we definitely don’t mind having this handy hack in our back pockets.
