If you’re trying to lose weight, you’ve probably cut all sugary drinks like soda and juice from your diet and replaced them with water. But water does a whole lot more than just exist as a sad replacement for deliciously sweet beverages.

A recent study out of the University of Birmingham in England found that drinking 500 ml of water a half-hour before dinner can aid in getting rid of those unwanted pounds.

Researchers studied 84 adults that were split into two groups. The first drank 500 ml of water 30 minutes prior to eating. The other, less lucky group was told to merely imagine feeling full before eating. Twelve weeks later, they found that the group who had water before eating lost 95 per cent more weight than those who had to picture full bellies.

The researchers think that the decreased caloric intake is due to the fact that water fills you, making you feel fuller and less hungry. (But some believe that people continue to eat even when they feel full, so this might not be the plan for everyone.)

But it’s worth trying, right? Not only is it super-simple and free, but it also improves your skin and has you feeling more energetic. So drink a glass of water before your meals, and hopefully you’ll reap the benefits.
