Back in 1991, moviegoers were gifted with the excellence that was Point Break. Bank robbers and surfers, sun and sand, Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze and, uh, Anthony Kiedis (??) were a winning combination.
Fast-forward 24 years later and Warner Bros. has just released the trailer for the remake and it’s… not the same. In fact, it’s not even close to being anything like Kathryn Bigelow‘s original feature. No, really, where’s all the surfing and, more importantly, where are the rubber president masks (we caught a glimpse of a measly one in the trailer)?
All we’re left with is a group of thrill-seekers, led by Bodhi (Édgar Ramírez), whom the feds suspect are pulling off crazy crimes to mess with the global financial markets. So they bring in Johnny Utah (Luke Bracey), a young FBI agent who goes undercover to infiltrate the group. He’ll likely fall for the girl (Teresa Palmer), who in this case, goes by Samsara, not Tyler. Whatever. Lori Petty, she’s not.
Look, we’re not saying the movie looks bad. On the contrary, with all the snowboarding, wingsuiting, motorbiking and rock climbing (and from what we could tell, a wee bit of surfing), it looks like quite a good action flick. But why? Why spin this as a Point Break remake? A little more tweaking and this could’ve been an “original” movie simply inspired by Point Break. And a Christmas Day surf movie? Oh, Hollywood, when will you learn?
