It's been five months since Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes released their hot hit "Señorita," and four since they officially started dating. But the Fourth of July wasn't actually when things between the two singers started heating up. For that, we have to go back. Way back. The evolution of Cabello and Mendes' relationship from friendship to romance dates back to 2015, when they collaborated on their first song together. At the time, Camila was 18 and Shawn was 17, so it's understandable if some feelings got mixed up during that period. The problem? They never spoke about it."During 'I Know What You Did Last Summer,' I really bonded with him as more than a friend," Cabello told Rolling Stone. "I think he did, too, but we were both really young, and he was experiencing the pressures of his career." Camila was still a part of Fifth Harmony then (albeit slowly beginning to establish herself as a solo artist), and Shawn was just starting to get a real taste of fame with "Stitches," his first major single. At that time, Cabello says they didn't know what to do about the feelings they were both experiencing. "It was this awkward thing where we both liked each other, but we weren't together. It was just weird. An energy was there from the beginning, but after that song, we didn't spend as much time together. Our paths just didn't cross in that way romantically until we started hanging out again and writing. For me, it just brought it back."

They actually started out by accident — or fate, if that's what you happen to believe. During one of Taylor Swift's The 1989 World Tour stops, when Mendes was Swift's opening act, Cabello was the surprise guest, and they found themselves together backstage."There were, like, 100 people in my dressing room at the time, and it was madness back there, but I had this guitar and I was just jamming out, and we basically wrote a pre-chorus and a chorus in like 30 minutes," Mendes said in a video released about the making of the song. "And we planned to go into the studio, and it was like an 11-hour studio session where we finished writing the song."Shawn described the song coming to be as "spontaneous and random" — so nothing like how their relationship unfolded. Sure, they have what Camila called an "awesome creative chemistry", but turns out they also happened to have romantic chemistry as well.[video_embed id='1777383']Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello showed the world exactly how they kiss[/video_embed]Things eventually came full circle for the two, and it really was a genuine development from teenage friends to young lovers. All you have to do is look at their video for "I Know What You Did Last Summer," then watch the vid for "Señorita," and you'll see it: if there were any lingering feelings there, something was bound to happen. They're two young, talented, beautiful, hot-blooded humans. It couldn't be denied.Perhaps the love gods knew something we didn't in 2015, and if they had hooked up four years ago we wouldn't have the Shawmila we have now. And that would've been a damn shame.
