We just learned that, after its epic season finale, This Is Us fans won’t be waiting toooooo much longer for its return. Season 4 returns on Tuesday, September 24, and we just learned some big-time casting news for the hit show. This Is Us has signed on Once Upon a Time star Jennifer Morrison to join the upcoming season in a “major recurring role.”
Of course, as This Is Us typically does, details are being kept under wraps, but Morrison’s character will be a “substantial” presence, reports TVLine. The series typically doesn’t cast big names, but Morrison is definitely recognizable after headlining her own series for six seasons.

But whose universe will she orbit? Will it be one of the Big 3, or one of their people? Well, we have some theories.
Kevin’s baby mama
This one’s almost too obvious. As we saw in the finale, Kevin has a son, and Morrison could definitely play the part of his mom. Based on his appearance, it’s safe to assume the kid isn’t Kevin and Zoe’s. He could also be Sophie’s, as Sterling K. Brown pointed out to Entertainment Weekly, saying, “Sophie has blonde hair, so that is more of an option than Zoe would be.” But you know who else has blonde hair? Morrison.
The reason Toby and Kate might not last
We don’t know for sure, but in the flash forward the Toby and Kate we’ve known and loved are no longer the same. Chrissy Metz, who plays Kate, told TVLine that the season premiere will pick up “roughly five months after the events of the finale,” presumably dealing with the baby stuff. But with a new baby comes a new dynamic. Perhaps Morrison will be someone who helps out their family, some sort of caregiver, or someone who helps Toby overcome his struggles with being a dad and his mental health issues.
A new partner for Beth
We now know that all the tension in Season 3 only made Beth and Randall stronger, but the life-changing decision they made to move — allowing him to remain a councilman and her to explore her new career owning her own dance studio — means things aren’t exactly going to be hunky-dory. They have made a choice that is good for the entire family, but that doesn’t mean that either of them have to like it. So perhaps Morrison’s character will step in to help with that, perhaps as a partner in the studio or a dance mom that becomes friendly with Beth.
Someone who messes with Jack and Rebecca
We’ve seen how they got together, struggled in their jobs, and coped as a young couple with three children, but we haven’t seen them in the really early days. They were married for five years before having Kevin, Kate and Randall, before parenthood made things real, and that period of time could still be explored. Perhaps things weren’t always sunshine and puppies and rainbows for the couple — and perhaps Morrison had something to do with that. Either way, we know it all works out in the end, but the potential turmoil of those early days could be fun to explore.
