You know those Thanksgiving episodes of television in which the family has some sort of big argument, dry turkey hits the fan, and then everyone makes up before the episode is over? Yeah, that is so not what happened on Tuesday night’s Thanksgiving episode of This Is Us.

Sure, the episode started all Leave it To Beaver enough, with all of the adult children flocking to Randall’s house to celebrate turkey day. Meanwhile in the past, Jack and Rebecca started their own family tradition when their car tire blew up, forcing them to forego Rebecca’s parents house for the holiday.

Okay so on second thought, things in the past capped with an old school TV feel, since it marked the beginning of a pretty awesome family tradition. Police Academy 3, hot dogs wrapped in fake cheese and saltines, and the yarn of thanks was all spawned from what could have been an otherwise crappy situation. It’s no wonder that Randall, Kate and Kevin were so eager to keep the traditions going in the present day.

Except this year, things didn’t exactly go as planned. Kate broke up with Toby, for starters. And William looks a lot worse for wear — we half expected him to die in this episode. And then there was the ultimate reveal… you know, the one in which Randall finally learned that William and Rebecca knew each other since he was born. Talk about a Thanksgiving gut punch…

We’ve always loved that This Is Us goes against so many typical TV plots and does something different, but this may be the one time we’ve wished that the show actually wrapped something up with a nice little bow. Because watching a heartbroken Randall break down at the Thanksgiving table after being positively giddy about the holiday all day long? Well that was basically awful. But then to not have anything between Randall and Rebecca resolved by episode’s end made it so, so much worse. To the point that if it were Thanksgiving in Canada too we’d all be drowning our sorrows in pumpkin pie and turkey right about now.

The relationship between Randall and Rebecca has always been one of our favourites, and now it’s been ripped away. We can’t blame Randall for being upset, exactly. But we also understand how Rebecca feels, and why she made the decision to keep William from her son. We can’t forget that even though the guy’s biological dad is kind of awesome now, he was a huge drug addict when he left Randall at that fire station. Any protective Mama Bear probably would have done the same.

But still… we can’t stand the way Randall looked (or couldn’t look!) at his mother, and we have a feeling things are about to get so much worse.

So while we anxiously wait and see what the heck possibly happens next week, at least we can take some solace in the fact that there were a few happy moments in the episode, too. Such as Kevin finally getting the girl, the girl finally getting her pumpkin pie, and the fact that some people still have working VCRs.

So yeah. That’s pretty much all we’ve got after that crazy emotional episode. Sorry guys.

This is Us airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on CTV.
