TV shows are known for fictional depictions of real life—the fact that Gilmore Girls’ mother-and-daughter characters Lorelai and Rory somehow weren’t pre-diabetic is proof that TV shows take liberties with the truth. But when it comes to real estate, some series have a firmer grasp on the IRL market than others.
From coffee house waitresses who have their own bedrooms in New York (nope) to Cal Tech professors who have their own bedrooms in Pasadena (that checks out), this is what it would actually cost to live in TV homes.
This is what it would cost to live in the lavish homes from your fave TV shows
THE BIG BANG THEORYWho lives here: Sheldon and Leonard/Penny and Leonard shared a spacious two-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment in Pasadena for 12 seasons. The apartment had great natural lighting and laundry in the basement but did lose points for a perpetually broken elevator.
Actual Price: Trulia estimates the BBT apartment to be somewhere around $2,000 per month to rent, which leaves plenty of money left over for red wine and yoga classes (Penny) and trips to the comic book store (everyone else).Warner Bros.
BIG LITTLE LIESWho lives here: Reese Witherspoon’s character Madeline may be dealing with a murder and a crumbling marriage, but her house always looks impeccable. The property is actually located in Malibu, not Monterey, and the seven-bedroom, eight-bathroom home has a long screen history that includes being used for Dick Van Dyke’s Diagnosis Murder and the Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana.
Actual Price: The home is available to rent on AirBnB for $3900 - $6500 per night. But if you want to put a Sold sign on the lawn, or in the sand, that will cost you $19.4 million.HBO
GREY’S ANATOMYWho lives here: Meredith inherited her home from her mother Ellis and the four-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom home has become a sort of hostel over 15 seasons, housing many medical residents, attendings, one-night stands and Meredith’s three kids. The location of the home is accurate, with Meredith’s crib located in Seattle’s historic Queen Anne neighborhood, though in the series it has been given the fictional address of 613 Harper Lane.
Actual Price: Built in 1905, the historic home with 2,704 square feet of living space has a $1.7 million price tag.ABC Studios
FRIENDSWho lives here: Monica and Rachel have one of the most famous apartments in modern TV history, but the interior of their spacious two-bedroom, one-bathroom, 1,125 square foot West Village apartment was actually a WB soundstage. The outside of the building? That’s real and located at 90 Bedford Street.
Actual Price: The New York Post estimates that monthly rent for the apartment today would be somewhere in the $4,500 range, while Empire Today has the asking price somewhere over the $2 million mark. We don’t know what the tips were like at Central Perk, but we don’t think they could be that good.Warner Bros.
SEX AND THE CITYWho lives here: The most confusing relationship on SATC was between Carrie and her Upper East Side apartment, which was rent-controlled for $700/month. Sure. The brownstone’s exterior was actually filmed in the West Village on Perry Street and Bradshaw’s 245 E. 73rd Street address doesn’t exist.
Actual Price: A one-bedroom apartment sans doorman on the Upper East Side runs in the $3,000 per month range. Sex and The City went off the air in 2004, so factor in inflation, and yeah, there’s still no way Carrie could afford her digs. As for Big and Carrie’s pre-war apartment from the first film (the one with the closet), it’s located on 5th Avenue across from the Metropolitan Museum of Art and rents for $19,000 a month, with a sale price of $40 to $50 million.HBO
GOSSIP GIRLWho lives here: Blair Waldorf’s father Harold was a lawyer and her mother Eleanor was a successful fashion designer, so it made sense that the family lived in the uber posh penthouse at 1136 Fifth Avenue in the Upper West Side. Though all the interior shots were filmed on a soundstage, the exterior of the building was as real as Pizza Rat.
Actual Price: Owned by Warner Music Group CEO Stephen F. Cooper, the apartment was recently listed at $30 million or XOXO, OOO, OOO. Alloy Entertainment
HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDERWho lives here: The outside of Annalise Keating’s stunning Victorian home, which doubles as her law office (or did before it burned down), actually resides in Los Angeles, not Philadelphia, and is located at 1130 W. 27th Street. in the North University Park Historic District.
Actual Price: The five-bedroom, three-bathroom LA home is 3,108 square feet, estimated at $1.13 million and murder-free.ABC Studios
