Once upon a time, though not so long ago, we were self-centred people. Not necessarily in a malicious way but we never had to take care of anyone else but ourselves. As long as we were good, then it was all good. But then something happened. Some of us became parents and that’s when everything changed.

So when this amazing photo was uploaded to Reddit by user Mystarbucknameismike, titled “What is Love? hope the son just grows up to realize how lucky he is… Pay it forward,” every parent understood it all too well.

I hope this photo finds its way to the family. (Photo credit: r/NYC)

There’s usually nothing great about a rainy day but this couldn’t be a more perfect photo of what it means to be a parent. It’s sacrifice and patience and love. It could be something huge like working three jobs so your kids can go to a good school, or something as little (but still significant) as letting your kid have the last pizza slice even though your stomach is rumbling or, yes, holding an umbrella over your child’s head while you get soaked (come on, this awesome dad was going to be soggy and uncomfortable ALL DAY). We put our little ones before ourselves. It’s what moms and dads do. We might not have always been like this but it’s all we know now.
