When it was announced at the end of 2013 that the lovable Paul Rudd was cast to play Ant-Man in Marvel’s big screen adaptation of the tiny superhero, many of us had the same reaction. “Paul Rudd as a superhero? Psh, it’ll never work.” We were confused to say the least.
Of course we all think Paul Rudd is great. He’s charming, witty and comes across as a relatable, down to earth kind of guy. He’s proved to be perfect as a leading man in rom-coms and has been terrific with side roles in goofy comedies. But as a superhero? Come on. He’s Mike from Friends!
Of course we won’t know for sure whether or not Rudd can pull off a convincing big screen superhero until Ant-Man is released on July 17th. But in the meantime, we can begin our early assessments today as Marvel released the film’s first full-length trailer.
In the movie, Rudd stars as Scott Lang, a petty thief who is given a chance to do good by becoming a micro sized hero with super-strength abilities thanks to his mentor Hank Pym (Michael Douglas.) He ultimately battles the maniacal miniature super villain Yellowjacket, played by Corey Stoll. It looks like Thomas the Tank Engine also has a cameo.
From the two minutes of miniature action, it looks like Rudd approached the role with his usual charm in wit, with a small injection of badass-ness. You know, as much badass-ness as you can have when you’re 6 millimeters tall.
