True, Meghan Markle looked gorgeous on her Wimbledon date with Kate Middleton, but one thing you might have noticed was that Meghan was holding, and not wearing, her Maison Michel straw hat. The hat, which she wore to Wimbledon in 2016, didn’t make an appearance on Meghan’s head this time around, and the difference simply had to do with her seats.

You see, when Megs was just a commoner like you and I, she wasn’t seated in the Royal Box…and in the Royal Box, there are certain rules one must adhere to.

According to The Sun, spectators in that coveted seating area must be dressed smartly, with men required to wear a jacket and tie. Not exactly ideal for sweltering heat, but rules are rules. And the reason she couldn’t wear her $1000 hat? So as to not block the view of anyone else around them, of course — which is why the Duchess of Sussex carried her hat instead.

A small price to pay for the best seats in the house.
