Long before she was the Duchess of Sussex and a working actor, Meghan Markle knew how to dress her body. But people weren’t exactly clamouring to know who she was wearing. Once her relationship with Prince Harry was revealed is when everyone started paying attention, so much so that she is now one of the most influential fashionistas on the planet. Along with her duchess role, being a style icon is a huge responsibility — one that Meghan clearly enjoys and has fun with — so it makes perfect sense that People named her the year’s Best Dressed.

Like sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, whatever Megs wears, people want. And the demand is huge. It helps that many of her choices are fairly affordable (though others are SO not) but Meghan’s style is also simple, sleek, classic and timeless — always a plus.

People points out that the $328 Club Monaco colourblock dress she wore to Charlie van Straubenzee and Daisy Jenks’s wedding last month sold out within hours, and her $740 Strathberry handbag “flew off the shelves 11 minutes after she was photographed carrying it.”

According to Hilary Alexander, former fashion director of The Telegraph, “there’s nothing bold or brash or too extreme” about Meghan’s clothes. “They are really just beautiful clothes on a beautiful woman.”

While Meghan’s most daring looks might involve pantsuits, she has obvious go-tos like boatneck tops, tea-length hemlines, a dark, neutral colour palette, not to mention her love of Canadian labels. She does like to throw the odd surprise our way, like that tuxedo minidress, the deconstructed trench or a splash of colour. Mixing it up; nothing wrong with that!

Now, if you feel the need to nitpick, one could argue that Meghan doesn’t wear anything particularly groundbreaking, and her footwear needs a bit of a pick-me-up (come on, Megs, enough with the blah suede pumps!), but she does make good, reliable choices that we always want to talk about, dissect and obsess over. And that’s enough to warrant giving her the title.

And in case you’re curious as to who else joins Meghan on People’s Best Dressed list: Lupita Nyong’o, Amal Clooney, Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Lopez, Tracee Ellis Ross, Kim Kardashian West, Sandra Bullock, Angela Basset and Margot Robbie. She’s in pretty good company, we think.
