If curse words flow out of your mouth like no tomorrow, we have some good news for you. A recent experiment has shown that people who love to swear have a higher vocabulary than those who don’t a.k.a. they’re pretty much smarter.

Up until now, it’s been assumed that those who have to put plenty of money into the swear jar are uneducated. Now, this study, conducted by psychologists from two U.S. colleges and published in the Language Sciences journal, is blowing that out of the water.

Here’s how they came to this conclusion: Participants between the ages of 18 and 22 were asked to name as many taboo words as they could within a time limit beginning with a certain letter. Then, they were asked to do the same with animals, and again with any general word, according to the Huffington Post. It turned out that those who knew more swear words, also have a firmer grasp on vocabulary too. Who woulda thunk it?!

So, if you ever find yourself getting scolded for saying a curse word or two, now you can turn around and say, “whatever, I’m smarter anyway.”
