Another year, and we’re gearing up for another season of The Amazing Race Canada. But this season’s looking a little out of the ordinary. In a country where the reality show contestants are so darned nice and unapologetically Canadian (or should we say apologetically?), the Season 4 teams of TARC are a different breed. Unlike the latest edition of MasterChef Canada, where we’re sure you were fine with either Mary or Jeremy winning, this season of The Race? Not so much.

There will be teams you’ll love, teams you’ll hate and, most importantly, teams who will do whatever it takes to win. Which makes for pure entertainment. So, win-win (for us, at least; not them). In past seasons, when most of the racers were more concerned with playing the game fair and maintaining their integrity, this year’s pairs are content with the friends they have.

This is going to be a whole other side of Canadian reality television — and we couldn’t be happier. Because a kickass, competitive season is exactly what we want to see. So, after meeting the teams one morning in Toronto pre-Race, we factored in their motivations, thirst for victory and just how sharp their competitive edges were and came up with (in a wildly unscientific formula) the odds you see before you.

Here are the teams, who all gave themselves their own names. Some need to watch their backs; the others will be the ones doing the stabbing.

TEAM JUDY

WHO: Kelly and Kate, business partners from Toronto
FUN FACTS: They’re friends who pursued their dream of starting their own fitness business, challenging the notion that Chinese women are frail, not strong. Oh, and FYI, their team name is inspired by Judy from Zootopia who they describe as “petite, energetic, positive and underestimated,” much like themselves.
CUTTHROAT CAPABILITY: Nothing can stop us
WHY THEY COULD WIN: They’re strong, independent and, hey, if you can work together and still be friends, that goes a long way.
WHAT COULD HURT THEM: Their lack of navigational skills could pose a problem.
ODDS TO WIN: 50 to 1

TEAM BANNOCK BABIES

WHO: Joel and Ashley, father and daughter from Enoch, Alta.
FUN FACTS: Joel, Ashley’s step-father, is a hard-working mechanic who came along at the perfect time for her and her mom; Ashley is the current Mrs. Universe — but don’t judge this strong, tough-talking woman by her pageant experience.
CUTTHROAT CAPABILITY: Nothing can stop us
WHY THEY COULD WIN: They’ll do whatever it takes. “We don’t care if it’s clean or dirty. We didn’t come here to be losers.”
WHAT COULD HURT THEM: Both are claustrophobic, so any time either find themselves in an enclosed space could spell trouble.
ODDS TO WIN: 35 to 1

TEAM TWINSIES

WHO: Rita and Yvette, twin sisters from Edmonton
FUN FACTS: The fraternal twins (Yvette is older by three minutes, FYI), with their four sisters were raised by a single mom.
CUTTHROAT CAPABILITY: Apologize before cutting you off
WHY THEY COULD WIN: They’re competitive, sassy, brutally honest and are totally fine hurting one another’s feelings to push the other to move forward. Hey, as long as all is forgiven at the end of the day, right?
WHAT COULD HURT THEM: They disagree on just about everything.
ODDS TO WIN: 30 to 1

TEAM TAYLORS

WHO: Julie and Lowell, married, from Lethbridge, Alta.
FUN FACTS: Lowell’s legally blind, with limited peripheral vision and no vision in low light. But, please. If anyone can prove you can do anything, it’s Lowell, who is also training for a para-triathlon and para-cycling with hopes of competing in the next two Summer Paralympic Games.
CUTTHROAT CAPABILITY: Like a basket full of kittens
WHY THEY COULD WIN: They’re game for anything, plus they have the added motivation of using their winnings for eye treatments that would slow the progress of Lowell’s condition.
WHAT COULD HURT THEM: Besides Lowell’s vision? Their sweetness. There will be no bleeping out any frustrations with these two, but rather, lots of gems like “shucky darn” will be exclaimed. Plus, they admit that while winning would be wonderful, their main reason is so Lowell can see as much as he can while he can.
ODDS TO WIN: 28 to 1

TEAM FIRE AND ICE

WHO: Frankie and Amy, mother and daughter from Aldergrove, B.C.
FUN FACT: Just a few months ago, Amy was in a car accident where she sprained her back and neck, but overcame it to race.
CUTTHROAT CAPABILITY: Nothing can stop us
WHY THEY COULD WIN: They’re fun, loud, bubbly and energetic. Their plan is to align themselves with stronger teams, thus keeping the target away from them.
WHAT COULD HURT THEM: See above: They’re fun, loud, bubbly and energetic. Their loud, happy-go-lucky personalities might rub some of the more competitive teams the wrong way.
ODDS TO WIN: 25 to 1

TEAM DODO BIRDS

WHO: Stéphane and Antoine, father and son from Saint Hubert, Que.
FUN FACT: Their name refers to “somebody out there, always making a fool of yourself, don’t take anything seriously, have fun. Dodo birds.” Perfect.
CUTTHROAT CAPABILITY: Nothing can stop us
WHY THEY COULD WIN: They’re willing to race a little dirty and be “less honest” to be the last team standing. “If they don’t want to be our friends, they don’t have to be our friends. We have enough friends back home.”
WHAT COULD HURT THEM: They tend to argue. A lot.
ODDS TO WIN: 20 to 1

TEAM MARVELLOUS MAMAS

WHO: Anne and Tanya, friends from Woodbridge, Ont.
FUN FACT: The single moms have been friends for over 35 years. They don’t even have to say a word to know what the other is going to do or needs to do.
CUTTHROAT CAPABILITY: Nothing can stop us
WHY THEY COULD WIN: They balance each other out perfectly, and are determined, strong, independent women who are driven to win so they can set up their children’s futures. Never doubt the conviction of a mama bear.
WHAT COULD HURT THEM: They’re not the greatest flyers, which could be a bit of a problem considering that’s the primary mode of transportation getting to and from destinations.
ODDS TO WIN: 16 to 1

TEAM EAST COAST

WHO: Jillian and Emmett, exes from New Glasgow, N.S. and Gore, N.S.
FUN FACTS: They met three years ago in the Big Brother Canada house, with Jillian winning the inaugural season, and began dating. They’ve since split but their relationship managed to grow even stronger. Now when they’re brutally honest with each other, no one’s feelings are hurt.
CUTTHROAT CAPABILITY: Apologize before cutting you off
WHY THEY COULD WIN: They’ve got reality TV experience, plus they’re super-competitive and vow to never give up on the race. Or each other.
WHAT COULD HURT THEM: Despite how great they get along, the race can sometimes bring out the worst in people. Just look at Leilani and Dujean from last season.
ODDS TO WIN: 10 to 1

TEAM NOT SISTERS

WHO: Steph and Kristen, dating, from Toronto
FUN FACTS: They each played varsity softball in the U.S. and also played for Team Canada.
CUTTHROAT CAPABILITY: Apologize before cutting you off
WHY THEY COULD WIN: Their athleticism and competitive nature will get them far.
WHAT COULD HURT THEM: Trouble with directions. “Sometimes with Google maps we get lost. And that’s when it’s like, ‘Turn right.'” Oh, dear.
ODDS TO WIN: 7 to 1

TEAM ZOEY

WHO: Anthony and Brandon, friends and co-workers from Windsor, Ont., and LaSalle, Ont.
FUN FACTS: Aside from the money for making their dream careers happen and getting prizes for selfish reasons, they’re also planning to use their winnings to help their boss buy a specialized van for his niece, Zoey, who suffers from several health issues. “She’s our primary motivation.” (Um. How can you NOT root for these guys?)
CUTTHROAT CAPABILITY: Nothing can stop us
WHY THEY COULD WIN: They never once said “if” they win but “when.” It’s that determination, much like that of their favourite team, Season 3’s Gino and Jesse, not to mention their confidence, how easy-going they are and how well they know each other that should take it. Plus, “We’re that dirty team that’s gonna win.”
WHAT COULD HURT THEM: If they become a threat too early, other teams will be fine U-turning them.
ODDS TO WIN: 2 to 1
