You’ve heard the expression, “black is beautiful,” and that is because it is. But “blackness” isn’t just one shade – it’s many. You can be a dark-skinned black person, or a light-skinned black person. Neither is blacker than the other. That’s what #melaninmonday is all about. The hashtag was started to show the beauty of blackness, in all its shades. Each photograph has a unifying bond: melanin. The Instagram account is extraordinary.
What’s melanin? Well, it is what determines skin colour. Basically, if you have little to no melanin synthesis in your body, you would have albinism, where your skin has basically no pigmentation. The more melanin, the darker your skin.
#MelaninMonday is exactly what it sounds like. Every Monday, people with black skin are asked to share images of themselves to showcase the beauty of their skin. And as you can see, no matter the shade, melanin is beautiful.
