Thinking about Robert Downey Jr.’s painfully awkward U.K. interview from last week still seems to induce uncontrollable cringing, doesn’t it?
If for some reason you’ve been living under a digital rock or just flat out missed the clip that went viral, Downey was across the pond last week promoting his new blockbuster superhero flick Avengers: Age Of Ultron. Somehow a junket, that was intended to promote the new all-ages popcorn flick, took a dark turn when the interviewer started asking RDJ about his political views, his troubled past and his relationship with his father. A visibly rattled and increasingly confused Downey walked out of the interview, saying it got a “little too Diane Sawyer.”
Fast forward to a week later, the cringe-worthy interview is now a thing of the past thanks to Jimmy Fallon.
Monday night on The Tonight Show, Downey made his first big American public appearance since the awkward video circulated, and as per usual, host Jimmy Fallon did the interview just right. And that’s not to say it wasn’t awkward and emotional…just awkward and emotional in a really hilarious way.
The highlight of the interview was when Fallon poked fun at last week’s situation by playing Tonight Show Emotional Interview with the self-proclaimed “emotional chameleon.” In typical Tonight Show fashion, it was pretty damn good.
Watch the skit below. Shucks. These two seem like such great pals, don’t they?
The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy airs weeknights at 11:30 p.m., ET on CTV Two.
