Toronto Fashion Week is here, and we could not resist an opportunity to see a Star Wars fashion show. What is a Star Wars fashion show, you might ask? Well, a bunch of Canadian designers submitted sketches of looks inspired by the film to Disney, and six of them were selected as finalists. The studio space at World Mastercard Fashion Week was transformed into a galaxy far, far away. Starry lights lit up the walls, and projections of TIE fighters were everywhere. R2-D2 and C-3PO were not in attendance, but an army of Storm Troopers was. It was terrifying.
As for the fashion, inspirations were drawn from Princess Leia, Darth Vader, the Death Star, Obi-Wan Kenobi and more. And we loved them all, but only one could win. And that winner was UNTTLD, who recreated Princess Leia’s slave costume from Return of the Jedi.
Using intricate beading and gold chains, Leia’s slave costume was given a very luxurious upgrade. “We decided to empower Leia and bring back the chain and make a dress out of it that’s somewhat armour, somewhat very sexy,” said the designers.
For her Death Star-inspired frock, designer Laura Seigel used a patterned, woven leather sheath to highlight the Death Star’s intricate features.
For his Obi-Wan Kenobi-inspired look, designer Daniel Beaudet chose moodier greys for his palette. Looks pretty comfortable, like it’d be a joy to use the force in.
Beaufille updated Leia’s white robe with a tight collar and a keyhole slit, and the look is so sexy. Oh, and the hair was updated, too, of course.
Rounding out our favourites was this Darth Vader-inspired dress with a hooded cape. It’s all perforated, which is already sexy, and then you’ve got the belted empire waist which is just super-flattering for everyone, including, it would seem, Darth Vader himself.
