First comes love, then comes marriage. Then comes one person with a stack of divorce papers. Well, sometimes.

A new study suggests that the more sexual partners we women have before marriage, the more likely we are to get a divorce in the future.

Yikes. Sounds expensive. And emotionally taxing.

The research brief, published on family-studies.org, looked at stats gathered by the National Survey of Family Growth, and what it found was…interesting.

• Women who have zero to one sexual partners before marriage were the least likely to divorce. Hm, OK. That’s not that surprising. We guess.

• Women who had more than 10 premarital partners were most likely to divorce. So much for the “just get it out of your system” strategy.

• Here’s where it gets weird. Women with three to nine sex partners before marriage were less likely to get divorced than women with two premarital partners.

So what’s that about? Is two really the loneliest number? The brief had a few suggestions as to why this might be the case. To paraphrase, women with two partners learn that they have choice, but haven’t learned how to make a good one. Sure. Makes sense.

So while we can’t go back in time and remain a virgin in order to mitigate our risk of divorce, we can rush right out and meet partner number three. And four. Just joking. Maybe.

What we can do is take proactive steps to keep our current marriage healthy and happy. May we suggest three ways to spice up your sex life?
