This year, William Leathers was one of only three undergraduate trumpeters to be accepted to the prestigious Juilliard school in New York City—and the only Canadian. The nearly $100,000 a year tuition didn’t scare him off, either. In fact, he found a creative way to het himself there.

Last year, William dropped by Your Morning to tell us about his crowd-funding efforts. He was fundraising for tuition and was able to raise enough for his first two years. (Check out his Go Fund Me page.)

Now, he’s back in Toronto to do his first show as a headliner (tickets are available here). In his upcoming performance, William will take the stage with his father, trumpeter and vocalist Howard Leathers, to share their musical father-son story. They’ll be joined by an ensemble of supporting musicians to play music ranging from jazz and blues to gospel, reggae, classical and more.

In the video clip above, William tells us about his time at Juilliard so far, what we can expect from his concert, and his fundraising campaign.
