Picture it: you’re an alternative girl, walking down the street and you’re walking by a beauty salon. You enter, and instantly you are plucked and preened by the matrons of the Mayfair beauty salon. Once it’s over, you’ve aged 20 years, but according to beauty standards accepted by older women who work at beauty salons in the 1960s, you’re right on track. This whole scenario sounds like something camp from an episode of Jenny Jones, but it’s actually from this video from 1963. The premise? Beatnik makeovers. And “teaching teenagers to better themselves,” as the narrator suggests.

It’s the most hilariously weird retro video we’ve seen in a while, what with the woman cracking eggs on the beatnik’s ragged, greasy hair, or using something called an “oxylation machine” to power wash her face with some sort of oil? After this woman has gone through the ringer, it’s true, you would never notice her. That is because she literally looks like Nancy Reagan.
