Sometimes, getting something for free instead of having to pay for it can make your day seem so much better. But an equally good feeling is giving someone else something for free. Leave it to our go-to coffee shop, Tim Hortons, to understand just how much Canadians love the gift of giving–roll up the rim is practically a part of Canadian culture.

That’s right, Timmies is doing something that no other coffee chain’s done so far. Starting September 29th (also known as National Coffee Day), they’ll be handing out 100 extra special Tim Cards in completely random Tim Hortons shops around Canada. Those cards will pay for 10,000 cups of free coffee. There’s no better kindness than a random act of kindness, after all.

If you’re lucky enough to receive one of the cards, you’re encouraged to participate in a ‘pay-it-forward’ chain, where you buy one cup of coffee and pass the card to another friend or stranger. Tims is aiming to share 10,000 cups of coffee before 10 days pass, which is when the Tim Cards will expire.

“We’re relying on our [guests] to keep the pay-it-forward Tim Cards moving across the country, one act of kindness at a time,” said Sam Heath, Tim Hortons’s Head of Marketing in Canada. “We’re looking forward to seeing how quickly Canadians can treat each other to 10,000 free coffees or more! Hopefully there are a lot of special moments created along the way.”

If you happen to have a special pay-it-forward story, you can even share it online at everycup.ca.

The best part of this event is that the special cards work for one coffee of any size and are then reloaded automatically over and over again until October 8th at noon EST. Which means the card never runs out of it’s coffee-giving magic… well, at least until mid-October.

“There is nothing more quintessentially Canadian than spreading kindness, and our [guests] demonstrate this generosity in our Restaurants every day,” said the President of Tim Hortons Canada, Sami Siddiqui. “This National Coffee Day, we’re excited to continue the pay-it-forward movement along with our Guests by encouraging them to enjoy and share a free coffee on us.”

So grab yourself a cup of joe, take a picture of yourself with the coffee and add it to social media with #WhyWeBrew. Then, pass the card to another person–because everyone deserves a little bit of happiness (or, you know, an afternoon pick-me-up).
