On Thursday’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy (Thursdays at 7 p.m. ET on CTV), we saw something that we’ve been seeing for years. Specifically, we watched as April Kepner continued to get kicked while down. Over eight seasons, April has been the character that never gets to have nice things and when she does, they come at a cost.

Last week’s news that Sarah Drew, who has played April since Season 6, is being written off the series at the end of this season along with Jessica Capshaw, who plays Arizona Robbins, came as a shock to fans. Frankly, a lot of us were pretty p-o’d. While Arizona’s exit could be painless with a storyline that involves her moving to New York so that she and Callie can raise their daughter together, April’s story seems like it’s going to come to a crashing end.

We’ve talked a lot about April continually bearing the brunt of bad friends, bad timing, and bad circumstances. She was teased by the other residents for being both Christian and a virgin. She watched her friend Reed died when a shooter came into the hospital. She was the only resident to fail her boards. Then when things did go well, including her engagement to Matthew and then running off with her best friend Jackson, they were still tinged with sadness (ie. breaking Matthew’s heart). Following the loss of her first child, April left Jackson to work as a doctor in a war zone, returning a year later and finding her marriage had ended. She and Jackson did end up having a healthy baby together, but Harriet was born after the couple was divorced. Even the labour was brutal, with April undergoing a C-section on Meredith’s kitchen table with no drugs.

It’s been a lot.

It looked like April and Jackson may finally find their way back to one another in Season 13 after a trip to Montana resulted in the two sleeping together, but alas, Japril stans continue to be heartbroken. Already in a fragile state from, well, everything, April seemed to break this season when she misdiagnosed the wife of Matthew, her ex-fiancé, and the woman ended up dying.

Like, that’s just too much.

On Thursday night’s episode, it appeared that April’s downward spiral into drinking and sex with strangers may have finally found a silver lining. After hooking up last week with Dr. Tom Koracick (Greg Germann), it seemed like April may have found someone to open up to. We didn’t expect it to be the acerbic brain surgeon, but after the pair spent the day together hungover, Tom revealed that the reason he had a falling out with faith and lost his marriage was because his 10-year-old son died in a freak accident. We did not see that coming.

This would have been a great time for April to share her own painful past, but it appears she’s still not ready. That was the moment and the moment is now gone. That also means we now must start worrying that April’s drinking and reckless behaviour are going to result in Kepner being the next dead doctor on Grey’s Anatomy. We were hoping she may just move back to the farm, but it’s been a while since Grey’s has killed off a major character and April has had a bulls-eye on her since Season 6. Car crash? Alcohol poisoning? Something more horrific? RIP Kepner. We always wanted better for you.

Also, enough with the cheesy flashbacks. We learned nothing about Maggie, Alex or Jo from any of the over-filtered memories this week.
