Exciting news is coming out of the Mean Girls universe today and it’s not even October 3! Following its successful run on Broadway, Tina Fey’s stage adaptation of her cult classic film is now being turned into a musical film. So, the movie that went to the stage is now becoming a movie again. The limit does not exist for this franchise.Fey made the announcement earlier this week, confirming that the Broadway play will be adapted for the big screen. “I’m very excited to bring ‘Mean Girls’ back to the big screen,” said Fey in a statement via Variety. “It’s been incredibly gratifying to see how much the movie and the musical have meant to audiences. I’ve spent sixteen years with these characters now. They are my Marvel Universe and I love them dearly.”Working with Paramount Pictures, Fey will once again team up with lyricist Jeff Richmond, who wrote the music for the Broadway show. Richmond was the musical director for Saturday Night Live before leaving the show to write the score for 30 Rock and later The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. In 2018, he received his first Tony nomination for Best Original Score for Mean Girls. Plus, he’s been married to Fey since 2001, so working together is probably really convenient for the pair.[video_embed id='1537961']RELATED: This new book is 'Mean Girls' meets ‘Heathers’, but gay[/video_embed]Fey’s former SNL boss Lorne Michaels is a producer for the play and also released a statement about the upcoming film adaptation, referencing the play's move from Broadway to London’s West End in 2021.  “It has been a joy to work on ‘Mean Girls’ and to watch it go from film, to musical, and now to musical film,” said Michaels. “I am very proud that Tina’s story and characters continue to resonate with new generations. We are all excited to continue to work with Sonia Friedman and her team as we prepare for London.”

Mean Girls opened on Broadway in 2018 and earned 12 Tony nominations that year. The play is based on Fey’s beloved 2004 film, which starred Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amy Poehler, Lacey Chabert, Amanda Seyfried, Lizzy Caplan, Daniel Franzese, Jonathan Bennett and Rajiv Surendra, as well as Fey, who played high school teacher Ms. Norbury. Set in Chicago but shot in Canada, the film went on to gross $129 million worldwide at the box office and developed a devoted following. For her role as home schooler-turned-Queen Bee Cady Heron, Lohan won three Teen Choice Awards. Lohan and McAdams each took home MTV Movie Awards in 2005 and the cast won Best On-Screen Team the same year.Based loosely on Rosalind Wiseman’s 2002 self-help book Queen Bees and Wannabees, Fey’s Mean Girls helped to solidify the careers of McAdams, Seyfriend and Caplan. Many members of the cast have reunited on social media since the film premiered in 2004. In 2018, Bennett teamed up with celebrity chef Nikki Martin to release a Mean Girls-inspired cookbook called The Burn CookBook.
