Great balls of fire! We feel the need to inform you that one of the greatest movies of all-time is coming back in a pretty big way, and we’re so excited that we could almost jump on a couch so that the whole world knows about it.
That’s right, Top Gun is going to take off once again, reuniting Tom Cruise with one of his most famous and iconic roles of all time: Maverick. The best part? It looks like his wing-man Iceman (Val Kilmer) is ready to come with him. Or wait… was that Maverick who was Iceman’s wing-man?
Okay so we knew this film was a possibility for a while now, but Cruise made it official when he recently confirmed to an Australian publication that it is indeed happening, and he’s looking to begin filming on the project in the next year or so.
“Its happening,” the 54-year-old actor said. “You’re the first people I’ve told. It’s going to happen.”
Right now the flick has no official director (although a longtime Cruise director, Joseph Kosinski is rumoured to be the top pick), release date, production location or cast. But thanks to this official confirmation we could all be returning to the danger zone sooner than we thought.
Given that the original 1986 film was released more than 30 years ago, we’re sure there will be plenty of updates to the storyline. While we can’t picture a sequel like this in which Maverick and Iceman aren’t up in fighter jets, we’re sure these guys have matured at least slightly in their older age. Perhaps they’re even instructors themselves now, keeping Goose in their memories and reminiscing about the good old times.
Or, maybe they still feel the need for speed. We know we certainly do.
