There are only a handful of men in Hollywood who we’re totally confident classifying as genuinely nice guys, men who can be trusted with just about anything, who would never lead us astray or down a dastardly path. Top spot goes to Tom Hanks, obviously. Because if ever there was anyone to smash the “nice guys finish last” theory into bits, it’s him. The second is Fred Rogers, a.k.a. the best TV neighbour in the world. So it shouldn’t be too surprising that someone had the bright idea to have Hanks don the legendary children’s host’s trademark trusty cardigan in a new movie.

That’s right, rather than yet another remake, TriStar Pictures has landed worldwide distribution rights for You Are My Friend, a biopic on the Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood star, with Hanks attached to play the iconic role.

It’ll be directed by Marielle Heller (Diary of a Teenage Girl) and written by Transparent scribes Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster.

According to Variety, the story will centre on a cynical journalist who begins a profile piece on the beloved TV personality and finds his perspective on life changed throughout the course of the assignment. It’s based on the real-life friendship between Rogers and award-winning journo Tom Junod.

“The script knocked me out with its message of kindness and its exploration of the human spirit,” Heller told Variety. “As a mother, I am so inspired by the teachings of Fred Rogers and as a human I am in awe of his life’s work. I can’t wait to bring his story to the public and be a part of such a thoughtful, smart group of people who are all coming together to make this film, which truly feels to me like an antidote to our very fractured culture.”

Watching Hanks as Rogers is sure to be the equivalent of enjoying a bowl of soup on a frigid day, sitting by a crackling fire during a snowstorm, getting a giant bear hug when you’re feeling down or playing with a basket full of puppies. It’s exactly what we need right now.
